Field of Remembrance Passchendaele:
'The Belgians Have Not Forgotten'

Fort Takapuna, Vauxhall Road, near Narrow Neck Beach
Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand

Sunday 4 October - Sun 15 November 2009, 10am - 4pm, free.

These crosses represent the more than 5,000 New Zealand lives lost in Belgium; this being double the number of New Zealanders killed at Gallipoly. This brought the total number of cassualties to 18,000.

The crosses are standing on the origianl parade ground where some of these soldiers once trained. The ground has been blessed by the local Ngati Whatua iwi to show respect for the fallen new Zealanders.

You are welcome to place flowers and other tributes amongst the crosses.

Please treat the Crosses and Field of Remembrance with the dignity
deserved of Hallowed Ground.

The Passchendaele exhibition is a silent reminder from the Belgian people that they have not forgotten New Zealand's major contribution to their freedom and the considerable sadrivide of what was then a very small nation.

Our thanks to the following organisations who have generously contributed to this project:

  • Max Birt Sawmills who supplied 10,000 metres of timber
  • Resene, who supplied 120 litres of paing
  • the Abilities Group, who put in an excess of 1000 man hours, to build, paint and transport the 5,000 crosses
